CASA's Commitment to Diversity
CASA's goal is to provide a diverse pipeline of engineering and science students who will enter the future workforce, graduate programs, or faculty ranks.
To address the current paucity of women and minorities in engineering and to improve interest and opportunities for the future key strategies include:
- strengthening the dual-degree program in engineering with Mt. Holyoke College by developing joint curricula and providing research opportunities for MHC students;
- developing pathways for under-represented students by engaging the Atlanta University Consortium and local community colleges regarding CASA opportunities for education and research.
- actively recruiting a significant number of women and minority students for the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program;
- strengthening diversity in Advisory Board appointments, the Women-in-Engineering mentors program, and faculty recruiting.
CASA recently completed a diversity strategic plan, which resulted in establishing a standing committee on diversity. The goal of the committee is to facilitate diversity throughout CASA at all levels and achieve a demonstrated impact for participation in CASA above national averages on women, African-American, Native-American, and Pacific Islander (underrepresented racial minorities) and Hispanic-Americans who are US citizens or permanent residents.
